Great China rocks!

Let's do an ESJ Jeep at Great China next year when Mark L. is in town! They have a private space that can accommodate 8-10.

Yes! Of course, arrange it so Steve can attend.

Let me know details. I'd like to be there too! Been a while since I've seen Steve,

I was at Great China for a friend's birthday on Wednesday. Peking duck was as good as I remembered.

I too would be interested in a Disorderly dinner at Great China.

Berserker? Mixing your metaphors?

Whoops. Sorry about that. I changed my post to Disorderly.

Too much multi-tasking today.

yes, that would be interesting!
Ray Coursen is also interested in climbing the Wall, so I wish to request of the powers in charge that both Ray and I are able to join this banquet....

So, is there still interest in a Great China outing? We’re now ensconced in Berkeley and available if so.

I am. Is the plan still for an ESJ jeeb? As has been mentioned, getting to Berkeley during the evening commute is painful. I don’t know how far in advance a res needs to be made for a weekend slot.

The Gray Lady weighs in on SF diningThe NYT today designates the 25 Best Restaurants in SF Right Now. What say you West Coast Disorderlies? There are a few familiar names on their list but a number of places unknown to me. This is of more than academic interest to me as we’ll be taking sabbatical in N Berkeley come Jan 2024.

I am in San Francisco and am staying in the hotel in which Abacá is located, so I have eaten there a few times (1x dinner, 2x breakfast/brunch). It's great!

I also went to Kin Khao, relative of Nari (on NYT list): stunningly good Thai food.

And I also went to State Bird Provisions, relative of The Progress, both of which I have been to before. These are fantastic and distinctive places that are well worth going to.

I've only been to Nari once, Kin Khao a few times. My issue with Nari is I felt some dishes were too spicy. I couldn't taste the underlying ingredients and/or protein. Kinda like bludgeoning a wine with too much new oak. Gotta have that balance. I brought a bottle of German Riesling with good acidity, but never opened it. I felt it would've been a waste. Our group went the cocktail route. I never got that sense when I went to Kin Khao.

Who orders steak at La Ciccia?! Lamb, yes. Always.

Has anyone been since Lorella and Massimo sold it? I read that only one person in the kitchen left so theoretically, it should be the same, food-wise.

I was in SF yesterday and today to visit my parents who live in an assisted living building near Japantown. Went to La Ciccia last night with my brother, sister and brother-in-law who are all locals but had not been back since it was sold. I thought it was quite good - everything we had was excellent and the service/atmosphere was great. Met the current owner who seems invested in maintaining its essence. I’ll certainly go back.

I assume most have seen the write up in the Chron that catalogues the succession between then and now. It’s an interesting story.

Dan, so great to read your comments and the referenced article. La Ciccia has always been one of my favorite restaurants so like most everyone else, I was concerned it might not remain the same.

So glad to hear the good news.
