Huet-a-thon : Interest in West Coast version? April in...

Mark Anisman

Mark Anisman
good afternoon,

takers?
venue?
Yountville? more central venue seems best given lugging of wines?

date : April 19 / 20?

bestest, Mark

I'm in.

Up for any venue -- either Yountville or perhaps Great China in Berkeley? (though I've never tried to book a wine dinner there -- though I know people do it)

I might be able to secure a venue in SF if there is a preference for that.

If Yountville, strongly prefer Saturday 4/20
If Berkeley or SF venue, either Friday 4/19 or Saturday 4/20

Thanks Mark for organizing these Jeebs!

I’m in, too, either Yountville or Berkeley. Friday may be better than Sat, but can make either work. And, yes, thanks for organizing this, Mark.

If my birding trip to AZ actually happens, which I'll know in the next two weeks, I'll also add a CA swing and will be there.

Hope you can make it, Brad!

Don't schedule around us, but the Mme and I will be in Berkeley Friday/Saturday for the Bill Frisell shows. If a jeeb happened in Berkeley in the afternoon of either day, we would def be there. But again if this wants to be in the eve don't worry about us...

Hey Brad, are you a birder?

afternoon would be fine with me
i believe it will go better if we had it at someone's house. is that a possibility on the Berkeley side of things?

Just in case a house venue in Berkeley does not work out, I have a venue in the Mission (SF) where we can open unlimited bottles with no corkage fee and we can seat as many people as we want.

It's a casual Lebanese restaurant (falafel, kebabs, mezze, etc.) and I'm friendly with the owners. I hosted a riesling dinner there last year with 14 people and 20 bottles, and we had no issues. Bill was less than $40 per person.

If we do it on a Saturday afternoon, I don't think there will be a problem.

Main drawback is its in SF, which I imagine may be a little inconvenient for folks.

I don’t know if this would appeal to you all, but we’d be happy to host this event at our AirBNB in Berkeley. It would comfortably seat the number of participants even including Brad if he can make it. The two provisos are that we don’t have enough stemware (we only have what we brought out) and we’d have to figure out what to do about food (plenty of local options, of course).

Wow, this is getting exciting.

I should have added previously, either SF or Berkeley is great by us. We just need to be back in Berkeley by 7 or so. But Mark your offer sounds great and is very kind. Just wanted to add that flexibility without steering.

BJ, what night is your Bill Frisell show? I see that he’s playing Freight&Salvage for four consecutive nights.

Hey Mark, we are going Friday and Saturday night. We're big fans and came down to see him. Last year we came down to see Dave Holland and team in SF and it was great.

Bad for carbon footprint, but fun!

As others have mentioned, yep, though I see myself more of a bird photographer than pure birder. Got back a couple of weeks ago from a birding trip to Costa Rica and Colombia.

That's cool Brad, I'm more the other way around...but not as hard core as many. I did just buy a Canon R50 and 100-400 and having fun...

I plump for meeting in the afternoon at AirBNB Lipton on Saturday the 20th of April.

So how do we wish to construct the sampling?
Focus on wines > 15-20 years old?
All sec or demi-sec? The whole spectrum? Each person bring 1 sec or demi-sec and 1 moelleux or Constance?

I don't know what is available in the East Bay if we wish to buy food and have it delivered to AirBNB Lipton.

I can bake some bread and / or bring some cookies.

Bestest, Mark

I’m fine with Sat pm. What say y’all to a 4 pm start time? That’d give BJ a good 2.5 hr before he’d have to decamp to F&S for the show (FTR, it’s an 8 min drive from here, 17 min by bus and 38 min by foot). Our address is 1076 Euclid Ave, which is in the N Berkeley hills, close to the Rose Garden.

My wines, as mentioned in an earlier thread, are a ‘96 and ‘02 CdB 1er Trie and a ‘17 CdB sec. I’m happy to contribute all of them to this event. (the proximity of the Rose Garden isn’t an idle fact: SFJoe once opined that the best match for an aged Moelleux was a sunset or nothing at all).

If Brad can manage to fit us into his busy travel schedule I’ll open both 1er Tries and we should have some Constance on hand, too.

Food options are many and varied. At 4 pm, maybe we’d want a selection of nibbles rather than a full meal? Or, since most of you will be traveling, maybe we should make it a more complete dinner.
