TN: The Virtual Tasting #40 (Feb 22, 2024)

attendees: Don, Eden, Jay, Jayson, Jeff, Lisa, Victor

Jay and Victor pour.

In the order tasted.

Pinon 2014 Vouvray "Deronnieres" - smells good but what does it smell like? "Pineapples" -Victor; strong acidity, citrussy and lip-smacking, it takes only a few guesses to peg it as Pinon, this will age forever, great balance and just a touch of sugar
Day 4: still charming, still fresh, nose and finish scream chenin but the midpalate not so much, and the finish goes on and on

Clos Roche Blanche 2014 Touraine Rose Pineau d'Aunis - 13.5%, but seems like lots of alcohol, "Baking spices" -Victor; it takes us forever to identify the cepage because none of us noticed that it's a rose... the palest of the pale... and it's really atypical, and really not much fun to drink; a rare swing-and-a-miss from CRB
Day 4: a little stinging, no different than before otherwise

Scherrer 2014 Zinfandel "OMV", Scherrer Vineyard - 14.8%, "Is this payback for the German pinots last time?" -Jayson, this is really oaky and I'm having trouble consuming it; "Quite a lot of oak" -Jayson; we have no trouble placing the wine in California but we do have trouble picking it out as zinfandel; this is another bottle of a strangely-off bottle a few jeebi ago
Day 4: nose has improved showing a zin blackberry-ness that is verging on black cherry, mouth still has oak spice but more balanced

Joseph Drouhin 1995 Corton-Bressandes GC - "Dark, tannic, dried leather" -Melissa, lots of black cherry, Eden call pinot noir (yes), this is really good Burgundy, "A proper glass of wine" -Victor, I must be off tonight because I should have known this wine
Day 4: raspberries with a hint of hinbeergeist, silky texture

Ch. La Lagune 1985 Haut-Medoc - "Graves?" -Jay(no). "Porcini!" -Eden(yes). Good texture, deep and balanced; the group navigates to Haut-Medoc but Jayson jumps right in to the house and the year, bravo!
Day 4: it's the cab sauvignon flavor wheel definition: tobacco forward, then some old leather, black currants and a whiff of decay/funk, savory

Ch. La Lagune 1983 Haut-Medoc - corked, frowny faces all around

Ch. La Lagune 1982 Haut-Medoc - very structured, excellent Bordeaux, Melissa tastes some broth (indicating significant age), Jayson again identifies the wine and vintage
Day 4: the plush version of the '85, more glyceral and fruity (though not any sweeter), this gives every appearance of lasting another 20 years

Ch. La Lagune 1970 Haut-Medoc - this is a British Transport Hotel Shipping bottling; Don and Eden both get mint but I sense it as a general leafy/green smell; another old wine in very good shape, stricter and more austere than the '82 but akin to the '85
Day 4: the entry and palate have become very simple but the finish still has a little fruit and shows the warmth of the vintage

Huet 1961 Vouvray Moelleux "1ere Trie" "Le Mont" - chenin, of course; "There is a lightness to it" -Eden, "It has an airiness that isn't like a dessert wine" -Jayson; and that's right: this isn't a substitute for creme caramel; this is deft and juicy and, yes, sweet and rich, but derived of a fruit essence, not vanillin; can't say enough about it
Day 4: OMG strong silky sweet citrus toffee heft

The CRB was both weird and incredibly disappointing. I think that's the first time I've said that about a CRB which wasn't actually corked.

2/3rds of my bottles of this wine refermented. One of those managed to recover nicely, the next day.

Refermentation would make sense given the flavor profile. Thank you Pavel Tchichikov!

Meanwhile the 61 was a true beauty and a delight to both drink and contemplate.

with good fortune smiling upon us (even though it was raining), just this month we enjoyed the Clos Roche Blanche 2014 Touraine Rose Pineau d'Aunis. the guests (several of whom are respected winemakers) were intrigued and quite content with the product.
