CWD: '03 Les Brugueres, Priorat Blanc

drssouth

Stephen South
Opened as a "cooking wine" (that is a wine that is imbibed by the cooks)

2003 Les Brugueres, La Conreria d'Scala Dei, Priorat D.O.C., alc 13.5%, $31: Deep golden yellow...slightly waxy nose...very rich and unctuous on the palate...reminds me a bit of a Chassagne-Montrachet...(sure this is
Grenache Blanc and that is Chardonnay but still...)...the pear and apple flavors are soft and lightly spiced...a good showing of this wine

Ah, love this wine. I'm not sure of the current vintage, 06? 07? But I last had the 05 (I think. I wasn't taking great notes at the time.) Unfortunately, this has moved upward in price, and while not out of reach in the wholesale market, it has become a difficult sale to retail and restaurant customers.

The '06 is the current one I think...it was excellent at a tasting a few months ago. I had the '01 in the past 18 months and it was good as well

I had an earlier incarnation of this, somewhere around the turn of the Millenium, and remember it being quite nice, much better than a grenache blanc wine should be, but then, this is old vines, isn't it?

Probably the freshest, lightest of all garnacha blanca varietals produced in Priorat. Always impressive and surprising IMHO. And I always wonder how they manage this with nothing else in the blend.
