In celebration of ramps, and other things, Scott is hosting several dinner parties at his place. The date chosen for the winos features his famous risotto. Bring a wine, bring a dish, and celebrate!
After all the brings, the final menu includes:
- standup starters: Gougeres, Artichoke dip, Endive Tart Tatin
- at the table: Sausage and Ramp Risotto, Side Salad, Ukrainian Winter Salad
- ...and sweet: Torrico's Ice Cream (two flavors, chocolate peanut butter, and soursop)
We made some attempt to coordinate drinks ahead of time so we have two starter pairings and then bigger wines for the table:
Taittinger 2007 Champagne Brut, Blanc de Blancs, "Comtes de Champagne"
Taittinger 2008 Champagne Brut, Blanc de Blancs, "Comtes de Champagne"
-- Paul: " I liked the 07 Taittinger better last night. The 08 is great but I think it will be better in a couple years."
-- Jay: "I’m hard put to decide between them... the 07 more graceful, the 08 richer and a touch more complex. It was a delight to have them side by side."
-- The 07 was nervy, taut, crisp, refreshing. The 08 had more chalk, more lees(?), better material all the way around but it isn't focused.
I Vigneri (Salvo Foti) 2022 Etna Rosso
Paolo Caciogna 2019 Etna Rosso "Guardoilvento"
-- The Foti is young (duh!), with a touch of citrus and black earth mixed in with the red-berry profile. The Guardoilvento is a little more tactile, a little richer, maybe a little funkier, a good older brother to the Foti. I enjoyed both of these best as small pours in a big glass to emphasize their perfume.
Drouhin 2016 Beaune 1er "Greves"
-- very pretty, not shut down at all (why is Jay always worried about this?), medium-weight, just-so ripeness, great bottle
Valdicava 2001 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
-- dark, unctuous, in good shape generally but somewhat anonymous (probably the price paid for all the oak)
Bartolo Mascarello 2001 Barolo
-- tingling or scratchy red fruit, maybe a little camphor and astringency, shapely mid-weight barolo
Soldera 2002 Brunello di Montalcino
-- Jay: "The Soldera was my wotn. What I found particularly impressive was that rather than seeming washed out like so many 2002s, they produced a lighter-styled wine without sacrificing any complexity. Magical."
-- Jay said it!
A great event. Good to see everyone. Thank you, Scott and Lana for hosting us.
