1 fine but not enough of interest to draw one back
2 really good and look forward to drinking / purchasing in the future.
3 really really good and climbs the mountain to hang with the best
2021 Vittorio E. FiGli Bera Moscato d'Asti Canelli : super. brilliant pure fruit. 2 but a 3 in its weight class.
1996 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La T“che : winner winner, roast chicken dinner. acidity perfect for me as i enjoy wines with cut. background stems & oak acknowledged but not intrusive. red fruited. balanced and complex. power is not its calling card, but certainly concentrated fruit with long finish. qualifies for this group review as it is an OG wine. 3
2004 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Spätlese : where’s the G? 2. 3 if it had a G
2016 Domaine Michel LafarGe Volnay : perfectly fine village wine. good concentration with some complexity. 2
2010 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée : Super black fruited and rich and dense but lacks minerality / complexity / personality for me. Yet I understand why this can be appealing to so many folks. I gravitate to Vosne wines more when at least some stems are left on. This tastes like a 100% destemmed wine. 1 for me but I will accept a 2. A bottle from my cellar is available at CSW.
2012 Schloss Gobelsburg Grüner Veltliner Reserve Lamm Kamptal : just beautiful. typisch fruit profile. a more subtle wine in the context of Austrian wines but similar in structure / power to other Wachau / Kamptal 2012 wines, of which there are quite a few masterpieces in the 2012 vintage. incredible balance. 3
2019 HofGut Falkenstein Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese feinherb "Onkel Peter" #4 : not as lean and mean as desired. too simple for our tastes. not my fave vintage of this wine. 1
1996 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Brunate Le Coste : ready to be enjoyed despite tannins that make their presence known on the long finish. tipico nebbiolo flavors that should hold up with longer bottle aging. 3
1993 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Chambertin-Clos de Bèze : a wine that red Burgundy dreams of attaining. pure and precise fruit with some tertiary notes. exquisite balance and persistent finish. 4 (pantheon) even if it lacks the requisite G
2019 Eric Bordelet Poiré Granit : a go to wine if one seeks moments of pure enjoyment. 2 but a 3 in its weight class
1993 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Auslese Nr. 83 : not tasting as fresh as expected so lackluster in that regard. otherwise it was more than correct but not stunning. maybe i don’t appreciate older German wines or maybe just not a great bottle (import shipping concerns back in the 90s?). 2
2015 Peter Lauer Kupp Riesling Faß 18 Großes Gewächs : Ich liebe Lauer Weine. acidity minerality present as one expects in a Lauer wine but not as evident due to the power of the fruit in this vintage. 2
2023 OuSyra Serifiotiko : herbal (thyme?) / high acid / mineral / apple type fruit . I see this fight between herb and fruit being judged a draw. not a high alcohol wine, so light on its feet but a power punch of herbs / minerality. a wine that meets the moment as it is wonderful with the right food match. 2
2001 Giuseppe Rinaldi Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo Ravera : disappointing. good but not as interesting as a wine should be of this pedigree. kind of a hollowed out great wine, with everything in place but not as dynamic as expected. 1
2001 Jacques-Frédéric MuGnier Musigny : pure sweet red fruited. new oak barely perceptible. very elegant and no tannins to speak of. 3
2006 Jacques-Frédéric MuGnier Musigny : quite similar to the 2001 version but a bit less sweetness and and more structural / dirt complexity. i preferred the 2006 but both are winners. 3
2000 Ganevat Les Vignes de Mon Père : trying hard to like this cult wine. a touch oxidative. soft flavors and mild cut at best. you had to work too hard to find what was interesting about the wine. it just seems like the wine did not habve much to talk about. certainly not intense enough to complement 24 month aged Comté grilled cheese sandwiches (although that can our fault). One participant opined that he prefers imbibing Ganevat whites within 2 years of release. short finish. perhaps expected too much. Consensus of 3 guests (who are deeply embedded in the wine industrial field) was one of agreement. I can see people appreciating this more than we did, and the good news for you is to be on the look out for the 2002 being offered at CSW in the spring. 1
2020 Nanclares y Prieto Albariño O Bocoi Vello De Silvia : a tad too fat. nice flavors though. 1
