2004 Mongeard-Mugneret Echezeaux - France, Burgundy, Cte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru (4/13/2008)
Very minerally with the acidity taking front stage. Heady aromas and notes of cherry, earth and red fruit are followed by taut (some will say green) tannins. This needs time but will be a pretty Burgundy in the next 5 or so years.
2004 Montirius Ctes du Rhne - France, Rhne, Southern Rhne, Ctes du Rhne (3/5/2008)
Aromas of smoky meat, chocolate and raspberry. In the mouth silky yet full bodied notes of dark cocoa, coffee, sour cherries and roast meat. It has great mouthpuckering acidity and a medium finish. Keeps me coming back for sip after sip.
1976 Camille Giroud Latricires-Chambertin - France, Burgundy, Cte de Nuits, Latricires-Chambertin Grand Cru (2/29/2008)
Wow, this wine is certainly alive and kicking. The color is still there, a lovely bright ruby. Beautiful aromas of aged leather, strawberry, earth & mushrooms. In the mouth, this wine asserts its vivaciousness with beautiful acidity that's followed by fantastic notes of red fruit, some minerality and an elegant je ne sais quoi that comes with age. A beauty that will definitely see quite a few good years ahead of it. Delicious.
2005 Domaine Bachelet & fils Bourgogne Blanc - France, Burgundy, Bourgogne Blanc (2/22/2008)
Nice pale yellow. Aromas of sweet spice, butter and apples. On the mouth, medium weight with waxy fruit, a hint of sweet oak and pear notes are balanced out by enough acidity. Opens up nicely on the finish. A solid 05 basic Bourgogne.
2004 Domaine du Cayron Gigondas - France, Rhne, Southern Rhne, Gigondas (2/1/2008)
This animal was a stinker!!! (In a good way) It started out with a full blown brett-bomb of barnyard, wet leaves, green peppers and horse-derriere. After the funk blew off an hour or so later, we were left with a wine that actually had decent bones. Some more bacon fat, smoke, leather and forest-floor notes mingled with the sweet red fruit that lied beneath the aromatics. Not as much acidity as I'd like but definitely a food-freindly wine. The medium finish revealed some bittersweet chocolate notes. Needs lots of bottle time.
2005 Saint-Cosme St. Joseph - France, Rhne, Northern Rhne, St. Joseph (2/1/2008)
Thick and chewy with smoky bacon, sweet black fruit and herbs de Provence notes. The wine is carried by a lovely acidity that brings me back for more. A beautiful warm glass perfect for a rainy night in the city.
2004 Domaine Cheze Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes - France, Rhne, Northern Rhne, Vin de Pays des Collines Rhodaniennes (1/31/2008)
First tasted on Thursday with muted notes. When retasted two days later, the wax and honeysuckle notes were much more pronounced. Nice mouthful of toasted almonds, pears and glycerol. A good value and would buy again.
2000 Domaine de la Vieille Julienne Chteauneuf-du-Pape - France, Rhne, Southern Rhne, Chteauneuf-du-Pape (1/20/2008)
Brooding inky red. Unmistakenly funky nose of Chateauneuf. Olives, plums, pepper, cherry liqueur and barnyard notes are layered one on top of another. A nice jolt of acidity makes it a great companion for a braised beef brisket or any hunk of meat. Will last for a few more years.
2001 Nervi Gattinara Podere dei Ginepri - Italy, Piedmont, Northern Piedmont, Gattinara (1/19/2008)
Wow, what a wine!! Bright brick red color. Cherries, plums and smoked meat notes on the nose are followed by spicy yet sweet flavors of dried cherries, mushrooms, smoke and iodine. Huge and long finish. Loved it.
2006 P.J. Valckenberg Gewrztraminer - Germany, Pfalz (1/9/2008)
What a nice surprise!! Simple yet lovely notes of sweet lychee fruit, smoky petrol, vanilla extract and spicy cardamom on the nose. Unctuous and full bodied in the mouth with a nice little gingerbread snap and marzipan taste to balance the slight residual sugar.A surprisingly lengthy and dry finish. Willl definitely buy again for the under $10 price.
