I tasted this at a tasting of the Charvin and Clos St. Jean wines in 05 when he was introducing the 03s to the states. It didn't seem my cup of tea, but the owner was a very nice guy, so Gail and I visited that next summer when we were there. He gave me a tour and was a truly delightful guy. The wines were not for me. I tasted a couple in the years following and saw no reason to change my mind. Haven't had any since the 05 or 06, I think.

Clos St Jean was very good and traditional until they bought the Parker kool aid in the late 90s. I can’t remember the switch. Somewhere in the 1997-00 vintage range.

No, it was 03, when Cambie came on and they created the separate cuvées of which Deus ex Machina was one. The sons may have taken over from the parents before then, and I haven’t tasted any of the wine made between 95 and 03, so things may have already been going downhill, but 03 was at least the vintage that burst upon the world with pointy, syrupy wine.

So, I looked up the history of the domaine. The current owners, Vincent and Pascal Maurel, who are brothers, took over when their father died in 1991. They made some of the wines Jayson enjoyed in the 90s. Cambie, indeed, started advising, and changed the domaine, in 2003. He was the snake in the garden. I do not know what all the domaines that Cambie consulted at are doing now since he died a year or so ago, but I imagine he had associates who can carry on in his absence, alas.

Wasn't that a TV show on CBS back in the 1970s? They were two college dropouts (one from Stanford, the other from MIT) who lived in a Pontiac Grand Safari as they drove between adventures on the backroads of America.

-Eden (IIRC, it was Martin Scorcese's first directing gig after leaving Roger Corman, and John Williams did the soundtrack, and the Grand Safari was customized by George Barris. The show was cancelled four episodes in when the owners to the IP behind "Route 66" filed suit)

It was! One which I never watched, being more into Charlie's Angels. Are the Pontiac Gran Safari and the Ford Gran Torino the same car? I imagine they are like six and half-a-dozen from GM and Ford.
