Per capita figures:

US - 9.7 L
Italy - 37.3
France - 34.9
Germany - 26.2
Spain - 32.4

So, we've still got a way to go before we catch up to the more traditional wine cultures. Of course, is that even a desirable goal? Who knows?

If by "traditional wine cultures" you mean a large swath of adults drink wine on a regular basis,, we are going backwards. The % of adults that drink wine has declined over past 2-3 years, and their average frequency of consumption has gone down.

That said, among those who drink wine regularly (e.g. once a week or more often), around 40% say they are actually increasing wine consumption and about 1/3 regularly spend $20+, a much higher % than a decade ago. And a higher percent of marginal wine consumers occasionally splurge too.

i'm doing my best with a hirtzberger grauburgunder smaragd 2022, and it's all very pleasing and high quality, but it could shout pinot gris little more forcefully.
