the reputed need for aeons in the cellar was often exaggerated.

especially if you are referring to that crazy outlier in the form of 2001 LSG :-)

Barolo made in Burgundy, that wine.

Not in 2001. In 1998 it sure is!

The Barolo line is a direct quote from brother Brézème that has stuck with me.

Once I read it, I thought, yeah, perfect descriptor for 01 Gouges.

Tbh, kinda true of '99 Gouges as well (at least the Pruliers).

It's been at least since 2008 that young Gouges has been friendly enough to drink (and also cleaner). Getting rid of the Barolo tannins and the more-than-occasional brett stank are both good things in my book and hasn't turned the wines into anything we'd consider philosophically objectionable - especially if we're still happy to drink the likes of, say, Mugnier.

2016 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Le Clos Guillot - France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon (12/14/2025)
Juicier and fruitier than the 2014. Also decanted off the sediment. Consistent with previous bottles in terms of dark berries, limestone, violets, and herbs. Although there are still some tannins, it's firmly in the zone now and drinking well. (92 points)

this prompted me to open one of these at the weekend. i have to say, mine showed more primary than your description. while everything you mention was there, teh hooch was keeping it very close to its chest. on further reflection, i got to realizing that this shit is now ten years old, such that at this point, the difference between your bottle and mine is firmly within the margin of error. where did teh time go?

meanwhile teh 2021 baudry chinon le domaine last night was a bundle of savoury / fragrant, raspy / silky, unalloyed joy. fresh, giving, perfectly weighted, and where did teh wine go?
