What Wine Are You All Cracking Open for the Super Bowl?

In our house, wine is not allowed during Steelers games. Lisa has some kind of "Assorted Variety Pack" of small local brewskis chilling in the fridge.

I think you must have gotten the idea for this thread from another board.

The pedants around here don't really know how one can 'crack' open a bottle of wine (not including the minority that enjoys sabering).

??

Dressner posts this same question every year, is it some kind of internet meme now?

For someone who doesn't follow football he sure is persistent.

Which still doesn't explain how he expects someone to 'crack' open a bottle of wine. But, we may never know the answer to that question.

It seemed clear to me that it's always been his slightly satirical nod to the "Crack open a brewski" talk that many football fans use. Have I been wrong all these years?

I thought 'cracking open' referred to the practice, usually employed on very young wines, of pouring the wine into a wide, shallow, glass bowl and whisking vigorously with a wire whisk for 7-10 minutes, thereby releasing the fruit.

Have I been wrong all these years?

Probably.

Which only reinforces my suspicion that people who don't use sarcasm when they talk about 'cracking open' bottles of wine are idiots.

But this isn't the Endless Pet Peeve Pedantry thread, so I'll leave it at that.

Unfortunately, yes.

Plus, I would think the wire in the whisk might cause dangerous reactions. The technique is probably better pursued with one of those newfangled modern whisks. But then again I've never actually done this Cracking myself.

As far as the original question, I'll be cracking open some pistachio nuts for the couscous in tonight's dinner.

Not sure if I'll watch the game, depends on if it is still interesting in the 4th quarter.

when is the Super Bowl being held? I should pick up something nice to drink during it. Generally bowling is a pretty boring sport so you need something to drink.

i'd have to get a television first, but super bowl sounds fun....(esp if Len Dawson is still quarterback for the KC Chiefs) and i think wines with twist-top caps can be cracked open, just like goddamn beers! pass the baked, buttered and salted wheat chex things...

There are so many wedgies that I would like to deliver.

I cracked open my wine and will continue to crack open wines.
