What Wine Are You All Cracking Open for the Super Bowl?

Since Tannat has more cholesterol-fighting resveratrol than any other grape, you just need to drink more Madiran! (Oh wait, we tried that.)

Nope, that honor goes to Finger Lakes Pinot Noir. Please get a photo of Jay's face as you administer him the beneficent elixir. Jay'd probably start bugging Scott Kraft for his spam to get out of that one.

Hey, I just bought a Finger Lakes wine today thanks to Astor's 15% off all New York wines Tuesday. But it wasn't pinot noir.

What pray tell was it?

I've actually had a few decent Finger Lakes Pinot Noirs (a number at a nice dinner at Ravines Winery a couple years ago), and I've got a few put away to see what becomes of them. I'm more than happy to share.

Dr. Konstantin Frank Rkatsiteli. I haven't had a Rkatsiteli since Broadway Panhandler moved away from Broome St. (I used to stop in at Vintage New York after shopping) and I always liked them.

I like Dr. Frank's Rkatsiteli, too. I've still got a bottle of the 2006 left. When I first tasted it at the winery in summer 2007 it had a distinct pine resin note on the nose and the palate was fairly tight and even slightly bracing. By last November it had lost the piney note and opened into a softer (though by no means flabby) wine displaying more fruit. Probably not what you wanted to hear (though maybe the 2007 is out by now), though I've enjoyed it through all phases so far.

This was the '06. No worries, I'm not expecting it to taste like 50 year old Huet. My recollection (from much earlier vintages - couldn't even guess which ones at this point) is of a fun wine.
