I've heard good things about the 2002, but apparently the 2001 is just being released now. Anyone tried it?
How good is it and when can it be drunk?
 
I think the answer is that no one has tried it, everyone will, but it's unlikely to be as good or long-lived as the 2002.

That's a question for someone like Mr. Dougherty. This thread is the first I've heard about it. I've just been waiting for the second 2002 release.

And where are you seeing it? I don't see it at Chambers. Are you sure it's a new release (don't remember seeing it before but that doesn't mean much with my memory)?
 
K&L has it. I was thinking perhaps it was the 2nd release of the 2001, since it showed up alongside all the 2007 Huet Vouvrays. And a new-to-me Huet creature, the NV Touraine Brut. Gamay I believe; anyone tasted this?

I just realized K&L recycles descriptions, so this could be a description from the wine's first release.
 
Unless there has been a recent change, K&L doesn't buy from Chadderdon, so they probably imported the 2001 themselves. 2001 is the vintage currently available in France. It has crossed my lips, but not under circs where I could give you a note (it followed a 1996 1er Trie). In broad strokes, as Jay mentions, 2002 was a spectacular vintage and 2001 is OK. As for the sequence of releases, half the 2002 is still en tirage in the winery, to be released as an even more spectacular wine. So you can consider that to be the post-2001 release if you prefer.

I also learned yesterday that the 1998 petillant will soon be released after 10 years on its yeast. I raised an eyebrow at the proprietor (I've been practicing in front of the mirror) and said, "Wow, that was a really tough vintage in Vouvray, a very tough time at the domain, and I'm very surprised that you had something you thought worth keeping." He leaned back a bit, satisfied, and said, "Try it and see."
 
When would you say that the Huet Vouvray Petillant drinks best--how many years, in other words?

I had the impression that the 2002 I tried recently was just an infant, so I will be keeping my remaining bottles for a while...

SFJoe treated us to the '64 last year (almost to this day). It was still going strong.

A recent '95 was gorgeous (of course a more recent '95 was a flawed bottle - not that I'm bitter over holding it for 7 years, oh no).

Two bottles of '34 petillant last year were among the greatest wines of my life. It's an unusual case, having only been disgorged ca. 1947, what with the war and all. So you may not want to hold your 2002s until 2077.
