2000 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel, slc 14.6%, 35% Mourvedre, 265 Syrah, 25% Grenache, 14% Counoise: Some brett on the nose...a bit of spritz early...becomes more serious after a few minutes of swirling...serious dark fruits with brisk acidity...still has a lot of structure and still some tannins showing....drinking OK but seems to need more time to "show" fully...a remarkable effort given this was only the 2nd or 3rd year they felt it was "worthy" of the term "Esprit"...

Thanks for the update. We purchased some of this at the winery in '04 and had planned to open some alongside the '00 Beaucastel. Sounds like we've still got time to make that happen.

Esprit was, I believe, at least the third name they employed, and it was done, I would guess, to capitalize on the Beaucastel connection. Their original intent, as put forth, was to produce only two wines: a red blend, and a white blend. They were intending to use only the name Tablas Creek, (and NOT make any Beaucastel reference) thinking the geographic reference would, in time, gain recognition, for the quality of wines produced in that location. Unfortunately, it didn't make it any easier to introduce themselves to the world that didn't know they already owned a famous winery in France. When they got a little more focussed in the marketing department, their fortunes began to change. Or at least that's the way it looks to me.
