got me thinking and I popped my last bottle of the 2000 Ogier "La Rosine" (under fake cork).

I've had wildly variable bottles of this wine beginning from 2004 or so onwards, and I was glad this was in the right direction. I still think there's something about the fake corks that fuck up a wine even when they don't come out all oxidised, and there was a stange inky component to this bottle which I've not experienced before. But otherwise, a mid-weight Syrah, more fruity than floral, some tar, lovely balance on the palate and some nice length, with a bit of olive and bacon complexity. Not a great wine but I'm surprised it's lasted this long.

Also had a very good '01 Jamet C-R the other night. Wow - really drinking well now. Less convinced by the Grosse Gewachs from von Buhl - both Jesuitengarten and Kirchenstck were for me a bit too ponderous and alcoholic. And the tiny bit of RS just throws me off. I do think the Jesuitengarten is better balanced as it's smaller-framed.

The other recent standouts were:

2000 Leflaive Les Pucelles, which was just singing after 6 hours in the glass. Deep and full, a cascade of minerals, and all that expensive lathered carelessly over the mid-palate and finish. Delicious.

1998 Nicolas Potel Volnay VV (from half) - did this see oak? Tasted like it did, but man is it great now. Lilting nose, like a fan scented with raspberries and morels. Just enough bite on the palate to stand up to fatty beef, and a drawn out sigh of a finish. I was definitely Kane on this wine in its youth.

Were these always under fake cork? I have a '99 I've been meaning to get to but just assumed it was cork cork. I guess I could cut the capsule to check.

That is promising. I have a 750 of this and didn't know what to expect. Was not sure if I should be optimistic.

I had a 99 Rosine last week. It was under real cork. I think more recent ones are as well. Was this a one-time experiment?
