2007 Domaines Ott, Chateau de Selle Cotes de Provence Rose, alc 14%: Pale salmon color...the nose is of ripe fresh strawberries just picked on a hot summer day and gently squeezed...the palate feel is silky and smooth with subtle floral notes mixed in the raspberry/strawberry flavors...it has a soft decrescendo finish that lingers just above the tongue...quite a remarkable wine...If only it was ~$20 a bottle...
I can see what the fuss is about...it is less challenging than the same vintage of Tempier but more "refined" perhaps...certainly an excellent Rose
 
The 2007 Ott is the best vintage I've ever had of this wine. They sell a lot of it in Southern CA, mainly because all the film bigwigs drink gallons of it at the Cannes Film Festival and the bottle shape makes it easy to differentiate it from Sutter Home White Zinfandel. I threw a pink wine party last year where we had 70+ ross brought by the attendees and the only wine with duplicate bottles was the 2007 Ott. Nobody complained, and we were able to do side-by-side comparisons of the wine from 375ml, 750ml, and 3.0 sizes. The double-mag tasted best, but it was a bitch to pour.

-Eden (I still preferred the Valentini Cerasuolo and the Tempier and Chateau Simone ross to the Ott, but that's just me)
 
Interesting note. I have not tried this due to the price. Well, that and they were quite rude on a visit there a couple of years ago. I loved the Cotat but find it a different animal than a southern France Rose.
 
I also love the Cotat ros but very little of it makes it to the west coast and what does make it here is priced at extortionate levels.

Aren't they the types who want to move on to something new each year?

Or is that just how the Talent behaves, while these bigwigs are conservative in their consumption patterns?
 
Ott is the Cristal of the rose world. Name recognition and overpriced to appeal to its market, but not unpleasant to drink.
 
$20 is really low, historically, for Ott. There was a change of ownership, I believe, a few years ago and it sounds like a new pricing (and sourcing?) policy. At $20, based on older vintages I know, the value would be reasonable (at $30, it was not).

I think Mr. South was complaining - like you - that he would much prefer the wine to cost $20, but that alas it does not.

I had this bottling yesterday with lunch and was delighted. A really nice wine; flavorful, earthy, bone dry and almost transparent. Thanks for the tip.

New low prices and new ownership at Ott? Who knew? I'd at least give it a try again at $20 or less. Did they keep the fancy bottle design?

Ott has three domaines. I doubt that you will find the "Chateau de Selle" rose in the $20 range - more like twice that.
There are other roses that Ott makes but they are designated differently.
The website is rather confusing but I was able to gleen that much.

For the most part you are correct. But Wine-searcher shows the 2007 Chateau de Selle for $20.99 at Wine Outlet in NJ. Whether or not that is correct or a typo is beyond me.
 
Actually, even specifying chateau de selle, I get about four listings (one for 06, the others for 07)for up to $21 and then a bunch more at $30, some with discounts for buying multiple bottles. They can't all be wrong.
 
'Tis post-off season for ross. Many distributors are trying to reduce inventory right now, so there may be deals available. Ros was hot this year, so if wholesalers ran low and re-upped late summer there's likely a decent amount left in stock (I know we've seen some good deals on close-out). Haven't seen Ott pop up specifically, but it wouldn't surprise me to think that's where the lower pricing was coming from.
