It's the best alternative I've got installed on my Mac at home. It's stable and handles most websites correctly. It seems to me less prone to memory leaks than Firefox; I can run it for a couple of weeks without losing performance.

I've also got Firefox installed on the Mac, but use it only for a wacky webmail program. I've had Firefox problems on my Linux machine at work; lots of sites crash the browser, and clicking on the red glass icon for the Disorder "...Inauguration..." thread causes my work machine to go into a soft reboot.

I'd be happy to hear suggestions for browsers you think are better, though.

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Firefox devotee. Surprised it has Linux issues, but that's not how I use it, so I wouldn't know.

What exactly do you mean by memory leaks?

I've just never enjoyed using Safari, which seems clunky and many folks have complaints. That isn't a scientific sample, BTW.

A memory leak occurs when a program that has dynamically allocated memory for some purpose does not free that memory once it is no longer needed.

I run browsers with multiple open windows and multiple tabs in some of those windows. In addition, links on various pages will often open new tabs or windows. Each window or tab is allocated memory when it is opened, and that memory should be freed when the window or tab is closed. While I admittedly have not examined the Firefox source code, it appears to me that when I close tabs or windows, memory is not always freed up. After running the browser for several days performance begins to lag badly. Whether the problem is in the browser or somewhere else (e.g., the window manager) I don't know. I see much less of this problem with Safari on the Mac, though it is not immune.

You are correct, Steve. I observe memory leaks when running Firefox on OS X, and also a burgeoning number of threads associated with the process, indicative of sloppy programming IMO. My problem with Safari is that it's just a bit too bare bones, being repackaged Konqueror and all.

Free subscribers may be included in that number, but still she's raking in plenty of money. Makes for deeper pockets if writers decide to sue, maybe a class action is warranted.
