A surprise

Certainly not. I am a professional journalist. I don't quote false statements. Obviously this was said by James, who is like me a member of the AIV and naturally backs the AIV's report on our visit to Australia. Mr. Spinaze has a lot of gall... More to follow.

Well, I heard Halliday speak at the Sydney Royal Wine Show lunch in mid-February (he's just stepped down as chief judge in the last year or two). Certainly the comments he made there about growing wine in the Hunter could easily have been misconstrued by someone unaware of the heavy doses of irony and sarcasm with which his speech was laced - intended to shock and offend by wrapping a kernal of truth in outrageous statements.
And yet, there he was addressing the core of the NSW wine industry - I wouldn't imagine him taking the same approach with a visiting body of international guests; making such comments as "100% acifified" about the most naturally acidic wines produced in this country and presuming the irony is evident is a very dangerous approach.
Curiouser and curiouser...

For what it's worth, Spinaze's response is about what I would expect to hear; acidifying occasionally at most (and more with the reds than the whites).
cheers,
Graeme

I can see South Carolina from my front yard.

No doubt. I'll have to guess that it was a case of collective hallucination on the part of Halliday and the AIV, possibly induced by the hot, humid conditions in the Hunter that day. Also afflicted by the conditions were the other visitors, who included Jean-Pierre Perrin of Chteau de Beaucastel (the AIV's chancellor, who approved the aforementioned report), Grard Chave of the eponymous little Rhne winery, Pascal Leclerc-Briant of that other eponymous cellar in Champagne, Fumiko Arisaka of Tokyo's Vinothque magazine, Juan Carlos Lpez de Lacalle of Artadi, Champlain Charest of Montreal's Bistrot Champlain, Nol Pinguet of Domaine Huet, Michael Silacci of Opus One...

Or perhaps there are facts that this crowd may hear but are judged too unpalatable locally?

It seems to me that the Tyrell's winemaker (Andrew Spinaze) and James Halliday are making contradictory claims. So why don't we just contact the latter since I've done so for the former? Once again, I'll be happy to do so, if someone can provide an e-mail address (I doubt trying to get to him through his website will work), and I'll also be happy to cc: the other visitors whom Victor mentioned. Is that not the easiest way to establish the veracity of either of those claims rather than listing names or looking through audited reports (which would be unlikely to show whether acid was added to the Semillon or the Shiraz)?

As I mentioned in another post I've just been in the Hunter, and also had extensive discussions at the Landmark Australia tutorial - the conclusion? Semillon in the Hunter reaches physiological ripeness early and is usually picked with low potential alcohol and high natural acidity. Acidification is rarely necessary but sometimes used. There's no reason why I can envisage an industry wide conspiracy to lie about this issue among winemakers. It's seen as a non-issue.

Wouldn't this refer to Nathan's relatives who voted for Sarah?

My folks are McGovern liberals, and proud of it.
