Barolos for Disorderlies

Make no mistake, people here love Barolo, but it goes against Therapy/Disorderly Geek Law 101 to talk about wines that cost more than $9 (delivered). Plus, Barolo comes from such a small, well-established, zone that even the modernists are old news.

I think you are either being willfully stupid or actually stupid.

Either way, if you don't like it here, move on.

Everyone else can eat a bag of dicks.

Why this is the funniest thing I've heard of all and hour into work.

Don't see what it has to do with nebbiolo, tho, being rather soft...perhaps you meant "tacks"??

er, did I miss something between these posts? I know I'm watching Pineapple Express, but I didn't think I had smell-a-vision.
Anyway, yes, there was the Rinaldi-morphing-into-Oddero-oak thread amongst others, so I don't think Barolo is too-overlooked here.

I liked Pineapple Express, but it wasn't as gut-busting funny as I hoped. Still fun though.

As for vlm's comment, I'm not sure Wine Disorder is really "post-Parker," I think discussions of Peter Parker and the Spiderman movies is still sure to generate discussion here.

Not to mention Mary-Louise.

How could I have forgotten that? This place should be listed as an official fan site of Mary-Louise Parker.

On a related topic, I don't think anyone yet understands where these "modernist" wines are headed. Some things really concern me and I'm not overly optimistic about some wine, but I do believe some will surprise us and maybe create a second paradigm.

I'll be opening a couple of '89s this weekend, Cascina Francia and La Villa (Seghesio). Perhaps a data point.

Cool. I own both of these and am interested in how this comes out.

Do I have to choose?

Who said I don't like it here? I love it here!

I think you wanted to direct this comment to Lipton.

Steve Wasserman and I went on a double date in the sixth grade. We went to a matinee of some navy movie, with Dean Jones, I think. Steve took Eileen Hoffman, but I can't remember who my date was.

Back in 1990, I tasted in Burgundy with Sheldon Wasserman for several days as part of a group. He could be described as a lush.

Hi Dave,

Well, I suppose it came as a revelation to me that I -did- own a batch of drinkable Barolo. My wine cellar is at the back of my house, obviously in the basement. The room I use is lower than the rest of the basement, under my rear tenant's ***********. Her radiator sprang a leak and started dripping water on my wine bottles. I have those "Swedish Shelving" racks so there were some 119 various bottles directly underneath the leak including most of my best Italians (Brunello on top, Supertuscan, Barolo, Barbaresco, Amarone, and at the bottom a few shelves of Sauternes). I noticed some labels getting loose and started moving the wine out to boxes etc. The leak got faster and the water got hotter before the plumbers finally figured out what was wrong and repaired it. That was around New Year's Day.

Eventually when everything dried out I started moving the wine back in, and I said to myself "Where did all this Barolo come from??" Of course I remember buying it but unlike the Bordeaux and Burgundy I just don't think of it when we are having a meal with our neighbors. So I asked my friends to share some with me. I hope we can do it a few more times.

Hi Claude -- remember, nil nisi bonum. His collection was just insane, Gaja wines going back to the 1950's, barrel samples with typed labels, etc.

Dave tells me that the Conterno was the 1982 Giacomo Conterno "Cascina Francia".

I'll go back and edit the first message to reflect that.

Are you referring to modernist nebbiolo-based wines specifically or modernist wines generally?
