Can it be true?

One would hope that the enforcement of these measures is skewed towards the population it intends to highlight (i.e. drunkards and teenagers swilling jug wine on the metro) and not the Noble Wine Tasters sampling the new vintage amidst the vines.

But it's hard to predict..

are you arguing that your absence in paris has directly resulted in an increase in the prohibition of drinking? and that, conversely, your presence in new york may be resulting in a new-found return to nyc debauchery? we may have to actively test this theory. we may not be able to let you leave...
 
A search of Google News and Actualits turns up only the Decanter article and another article that cites the Decanter article and is based on it. What is so sad is that the French govt. has been so ridiculous that one can't know for sure if it is an April fool joke or not. Pointing to the latter is the fact that the government recently had to back down (at least in part) on the banning off free wine samples, and it would seem, therefore, unlikely to set of a new round of controversy, especially one that would heavily impact tourism and the restaurant industry.

Indeed. I was thinking of looking through the online Parliamentary transcripts for the debates over free wine samples and other similarly absurd issues. Should be some nice silly quotes. But I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Good catch, Jeff. I actually know The Wine Guy: several of my students used to subscribe to his email blandishments. Pretty good selection, if you go for the spoofy stuff.
