TN: 2001 Kilikanoon Shiraz Oracle, Clare Valley. Nose of new world syrah. Very sweet and deep, but simple on the nose. In the mouth, this is an abomination of sickly sweet gook. A 7-Eleven product, not a wine. $38. 82 points.

"A 7-Eleven product"...A BIG GULP wine??...sounds very bad...

Fuck man, where are you coming up with 82 points?!? Did you spin a wheel and get that? From the sound of it, it should be like 0 points, down the drain, going back to the reserves and pulling something better.... Or, is that 82 points on Putnam's 1000 point scale?

Chill. A big gulp can be quenching and useful, though not recommended. This is a well-made, but scientific beverage. It deserves a B- in my opinion. Put down the crack pipe or post a note yourself.

From your description above, was just surprised by such a score.

And, when I do drugs, I generally don't surf the interwebs. But that's me.

Thanks for the note.

I think I said something similar about a Kilikanoon wine once. They are relentlessly horrible wines, utterly and irredeemably bad. But at the same time, they represent--or seem to--a high and popular (not that popular is bad) standard of wine making, of a certain kind. Sort of like, I don't know, David Caruso's acting maybe? Or bad jazz?

God, they suck though. I can't believe I bought three of them once, a long time ago.

(edited for clarity)

Did you taste it as a young wine and decide to buy it?

Otherwise it is a tax on inexperience, which happens to us all, or points-whoring, in which case you deserve it.

Wine beverage product. Bleh.

Oh, well, I probably knew the scores, and I will admit to having whored, but in this case it was mostly inexperience. I was trying to fill out a case that I was buying over the phone with something that my Aussie-loving friends and family would like. I was told it was a great price. I never foisted it on anyone.

I will say also, that, at the time--and it really wasn't that long ago, a few years--I thought that I was sufficiently broad minded to appreciate all kinds of "wine beverage products." Now I know better. I'm a narrow-minded bastard.

We have developed our own points system. Well, one of my drinking buddies did.
It is based on 1,000,000 points (that is a million for you math challenged).

We figure little things like accuracy need not get in the way of precision.

It is at least 10,000 times more precise that Parker's system.

Today Halifax, tomorrow the Outer Maldives
