NWR: Online backup

A friend of mine has a need for online backup of files only, not a whole computer configuration. A small expense would not matter. Is there a good solution out there that is reliable and not too complex to implement?

What do you mean by "online"? Do you want a service that archives and stores files for you, or do you want to backup one computer to another one owned by the same person? For the Mac, there is the iDisk service for the former case, and Time Machine in the latest OS can be configured for backing up across the network. I am a complete Win* tard, but I've heard good things about IBackup and IOmega's IStorage Online.

Mozy is free for up to 2GB of storage, and runs on both a Mac and a PC. Very simple to use... Hard to beat free. Of course, if your friend needs more space, he can purchase more on Mozy as well.

If he needs to keep 2 computers in different locations in sync, he can try SugarSync. YMMV.

Offsite archival file storage. Preferably web-based.

MediaMax and Mozy are free albeit limited in bandwidth and size, but might work. There are pay plans for each, too. Carbonite is good for the $.

Amazon S3 w/ a Jungle Disk front-end is pay as you go, which is tasty.

There's certainly plenty of ways to do it if you have your own domain, too. Dreamhost, for instance grows your account 2GB a month. You'll have to config a client, but it's not too bad. There's various WebDav solutions out there...

Drop a message/email if you want a walk-through on anything in particular.
