gotcha, sounds good...
I feel obligated to add that most people thought I was being ridiculous (by decanting it).

But it was the first bottle to be drained.

i've been playing around with aeration and temps with various bubblies for about a year now...the best result i've gotten so far is a near room temp cava which opened gloriously and kept enough petillance to still call it a bubbly.....but chenin b is no macabeo (and i've not chilled the sparkling chenins too much...yet) so it sounds worth trying to me.

While I'm glad to be quoted about anal fromage, I think we need to correct that Alsace gris issue.

Or, after a brief survey, not. There, yes. Here? Difficult.

WINE DISORDER OL - Slaton's place, San Francisco, California (4/25/2009)

Slaton is a terrific host, amazingly calm creator of all kinds of good foodstuffs (chorizo maramalade on goat cheese, assorted pizzas with freshly made crusts), and the great group of wine geeks who gathered at his place Saturday afternoon also brought tasty edibles (juicy Peking duck, Utah artisanal cheese that tastes like coffee, baked fennel) and wines that contributed to a delightful afternoon and evening. The standout wine for me was the 2000 San Leonardo, but there were lots of really wonderful bottles, including the '05 Roche aux Moines Savennieres, '05 Clos des Briords Muscadet, '02 Eyrie Reserve Pinot, and assorted older sweet wines. It was great to meet Nathan, Scott, Cory, Emily and J.C., and Slaton's wine-geek phobic roommate. I missed a couple of the bottles that were taken later to Terroir, but recorded most of what was opened as follows:

Holy Mother of FSM! That's a shitload of good wine unless there's another 20 people lurking off camera. Slaton sure knows how to throw a wingding of a party.

2006 Avanguardia Rkatsiteli Cristallo - USA, California, Sierra Foothills

Any more information about this producer? New name to me.

Did you guys invite the winemakers to party as well?
They were already flying to New York on Saturday, alas.
We did have one local winemaker (represent!) but a couple of others invited couldn't make it.

He's outside of Grass Valley and he's doing things with uncommon grapes, like rkatsiteli, gamay and some Cal Davis hybrids. They're not native yeasts.

Seems to be liked more by me and say Tom Hill than your average Disorderly:

Tom's comment about the Alice Feiring crowd liking the wines turned out to be wrong.

I also wrote about this winery on the Wine Therapy board.

I revisted the rkatsiteli last night and found a bit more to like. Poured it with a slight chill. It still has that creamed corn thing on the nose that I have a strong aversion to in any white, but the palate was more generous than on Saturday. Moderate richness with green fruit and herbaceous, bitter quinine notes. Still not loving it, but it's more interesting to me now.

Man, did we really drink all that?

As mentioned, Slaton did an excellent, and seemingly effortless, job of hosting, although I don't want to think about how long it took to do the dishes the next day.

I didn't try everything that was present, and I don't have clear memories of everything I tried, but favorites for me were '05 Burgerspital, '02 Eyrie, '01 Clos Rougeard, the '83 Gewurtz and the '77 Zin. The Ageno and the Ca de Noci were a lot of fun as well.

Of course, the real highlight of the evening was the Slaton-led hike up to the make-out spot at sunset.

Is this a still wine, or frizzante?
What foods do you think it would shine with?

Thanks for the notes and pictures, riches indeed.

Off topic:
Slaton,
I tried the 1994 Cappellano Otin Fiorin Gabutti Barolo last weekend, it turned out to be an excellent bottle. My friend, who doesn't get to try many Barolo wines, thought it tasted of primordial essence. Thanks for the recommendation on this one.

I want to know about this Gamay; I'm skeptical.

Who the fuck is the Alice Feiring crowd?

Jenning's point scores are exactly 1&3/4 points two high across the board any wine geek would know that. Points are an exact thing obviously, and accuracy is a must.

Steve:

I kind of liked the gamay. A bit sweet and fruit forward. It's from grapes he planted himself. If you look in the thread here you can see some pictures I took of his vineyard.
He had problems with the 2005 vintage, so he kept it and blended it with the gamay from the 2006 vintage. It's probably more like Beaujolais Village than Cru Beaujolais.
