FRV100 White, Rubentis '08

Jean-Paul Brun FRV100 White (Beaujolais) The chardonnay variant of Brun bubblies delivers plenty of off-dry fun. Lots of fruit, a hint of toast, light, and jubilant

2008 Ameztoi Getariako Txakolina Rubentis (Pais Vasco) Wow, much more intensity than 2007. Tart pink grapefruit and watermelon playing at the seashore during a heavy storm of acid rain. Slight frizzante, piercing acidity, big hunks of rock, and persistant fruit makes for a wonderful summer wine.

Bill, it wasn't till after you left the store with these wines that it clicked for me whence your name was familiar to me. Glad you liked them.

OK, this explains a lot.

Faking grape varieties is all the fashion. A few years back all of the roussanne in California turned out to be viognier, and now all the albario in Australia has turned out to be savagnin blanc.

Fakery, or simple misidentification? Ampelography can be a tricky business, especially if one is looking only at cuttings.

No, I was joking on the 'fake' thing. It was misidentification, of course. Randall Grahm apparently confused viognier with the roussanne he was trying to introduce to California. And some supposed albario cuttings arrived in Australia more than 20 years ago from Spain after apparently suffering from a double misidentification - first, savagnin was confused with a grape called albarn, and then some wise guy who'd never heard of albarn corrected the spelling to turn it into albario... As a result, Australian growers recently discovered that their proud 150 hectares of albario actually were savagnin blanc (or traminer, if you prefer the German name.) It's caused quite a ruckus down there.

I had the same epiphany, Susannah. I'm rarely disappointed in anything from your shop. See you soon.
