Wine tourism near Barcelona?

Next week we'll be traveling to Barcelona for a week. Though most of our time will be spent in the city, we will rent a car for one day to venture out to El Celler de Can Roca in Girona for dinner. Since we have the car for the day, it might also be possible to visit a winery or two in the outlying regions, especially should they be in the general direction of Girona. My only knowledge of Catalonian wine regions is that the Peneds is close, but in the opposite direction of Girona. Any suggestions to be had here?

TIA

I've enjoyed some Terra Altas, but I did no visiting while there and thus can't recommend anyone in particular, aside from liking their wines.

We just hung a signed tasting menu from Can Roca in our dining room a few hours ago. It will be a long while before I forget that meal.

There is a wine fair in St Marti d'Empuries this weekend I believe.

Most of the wineries in Girona are close to Figueres.

Wine spa at Perelada.

Emporda wineries

Cantallops and Capmany have a few wineries.

Wine tours are nothing like as well organised as in Penedes. the largest is Perelada.

For Penedes go by train / taxi. Very cheap to San Sadurni for Freixenet and Codorniu and Vilafranca for Torres / Jean Leon.

Terra Alta is 200 miles from Girona, in southern Catalonia - not a good choice geographically. You have a number of interesting places - not wine factories like Freixenet, Codorniu or Torres - in the Empord-Costa Brava appellation very close to Girona, and even outside that appellation, as Clos d'Agon is not in it. These are interesting, small-scale estates that you could visit, and even more than one, on your day trip to Can Roca (best wine list in Spain, BTW - and sommelier and co-owner Pitu Roca is also Spain's leading German wine importer - just look at that riesling array!)

FWIW, Girona is also worth a stroll. The cathedral is very nice, and some of the old streets near it are quite magical (albeit the magic was somewhat diminished when we were crowded against a wall by a passing Segway tour).

Can Xiquet just outside Cantallops is a great hotel with a superb restaurant and a superlative view. I love the place.

Other than Masia Serra in Cantallops visit Vinyes del Aspres there.

But the wineries in Emporda have tasting rooms but not really organised for tours. You could drive around but may not be open if you just turn up.

And lunch in El Bulli? Get yourself on the standby list.

Wow, Victor, many thanks for the treasure trove of information. I'll see what I can do with it now.

Thor - I've heard that somewhere... like mebbe ThorIverson.com?

Mark, best experience to be had around the area is to have lunch in Villa Mas, a restaurant in San Feliu de Guixols with one of the most amazing & inexpensive burgundy winelists in the world

Wineries in the area are skippable, but Villa Mas is not

I am not really a seaside town person. My in-laws had a place in SFdG and I went every year without much enthusiasm.

The name suggests that they like their wine. You can pop into Empordalia nearby for a tasting.
