Four Nations

Rahsaan

Rahsaan
Friday night at Dino with Maureen and Bob.

After waiting and stalling for a while until the interlopers left our Prime Table, we started off with the 2001 Fritz Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Kabinett which was a lacy pleasing joy although sweeter and slightly rounder than I expected/remembered from other 2001 wines. Of course the crystal clear underlying crispness was there but I dare say this needs a bit more age for it to fully stretch out into the perfect place for my palate.

Another intermediary wine was the 2002 Alzinger Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd which was big and pure and fine but a touch too big and brawny at the moment for my tastes. Come back to this.

With the main course, the 2000 Palari Faro was very interesting as I would not have identified it as a Sicilian wine with all of its sleek fresh tones. But maybe I dont know enough about Sicily. With time, the nutty dark red fruit started to show some drying sweet elements that Dean referred to as oak. The rest of us were not convinced. But we enjoyed drinking it at the time and were happy doing so. So sue us!

We ended with the 1995 Huet Vouvray Cuve Constance which was quite dark and botrytis-filled and definitely did not get enough air. It seemed flabby and underwhelming upon opening but became more complex as it gained air and warmed in the glass. Is that always the case? Im sure it will only be better as Bob follows it at home!

Good idea. Because now, 5 hours after opening, it is even better, golden, firm, yet sleek. But I would still rather see it again in a few years.

I'll side with Dean. The wine is aged in 100% NFO, although it integrates pretty well with a few years in bottle.

A nice bottle of the 2001 converted a few disorderlies about six months back to the pleasures of Etna nerello mascalese (& capuccio).

Ok, I'll trust you on that. I thought I read about a more varied and complicated barrel treatment, but regardless of those details the wine was pretty interesting and worthy of further study.

I usually hate the way new vintages of Palari Faro taste at the traveling Tre Bicchieri show each year. All woodsmoke and vanilla, yech. But with a few years under its belt I tend to like it very much. Some wines eat up wood and some don't, I guess.

The problem is what it costs. The '06 Faro costs about the same as '06 Potel or Hudelot-Noellat Suchots. Actually a little more. I'm buying the Suchots.

Ouch. Didn't realize. I thought I saw it on the web closer to $50 but I'm assuming your range is a bit higher than that.

I hadn't poured myself any of the Faro when Bob insisted I try it - quite a nice wine and really not showing any ill effects from the oak treatment. Reminded me of burgundy - guess that's why I liked it.

Rahsaan, the leftover huet was stunning last night. Can't be so impatient with these sweet wines, they need air.

Oh, and we drank the rejected '98 muller catoir rieslaner BA last night - yumola!

Glad to hear it. Sounds like a lot of pleasure was available.

It actually wasn't rejected (despite my jokes) but rather Bob proposed the Constance first so we went with that instead.
