Schloss Johannisberger riesling kabinett trocken 2003
I remember visiting Schloss Johannisberg in '04 and tasting through the '03-range. In the end this was the wine I found most successfull and to me it was better than the sptlese trocken. I was told it also was the favourite of the winemakers. I got a bottle with me home that has been lying around in my cellar. So it was time to open it and this has really aged wonderfully. Straw colour, slightly towards brown. Very fine nose. Mineral, stoney, earth, flowers. Shows some evolvement and complexity. Dry riesling in the mouth, but shows some residual sugar there. Very fine and focused fruit for this vintage. Elegant and surprisingly underripe. Mineral. Medium acidity and good length. This starts to drink great now and is truly a lot better than you expected. The only thing that tells of the vintage is the somewhat lesser acidic structure than you expect from the grape. Great wine.

I like your perspective. Not a lot of people would include 'brown, underripe' and 'great wine' in the same tasting note.

Sounds fun!

Lots of good stuff from 2003 in Germany. I had a lovely bottle of Paul Frst's 2003 Brgstadter Centgrafenberg Sptlese trocken (regular, not the "R") a few weeks back.
