Quintas de Melgao QM 2006 Vinho Verde Alvarinho (Mono) A spare bottle left aside to see what happened with a little age, though in this case only a microscopic bit of patience was actually exercised, and the full experiment will have to wait for another day. Salty and almost soda-like, thought not in the frothy fashion of something like txakolina, but more in the lingering, quasi-electric tactility of the wine. Lemon, lime, grapefruitthe greenish, less sweet end of the citric spectrum is a little more spare than at release, and maybe the wines just a touch less fun that before. Food, which is always good with this wine (something saline and from a shell or carapace works best), might be a little more necessary than before. (5/09)

Jorge Ordez & Co. 2006 Mlaga Seleccion Especial 1 (Mlaga) Intensely sweet, like candied fruitthough thats not quite right, since the fruit isnt sugary or slightly synthetic, its just nearly solid in its sucrosity. Orange peel? Or blossom? Why not both? Theres not really all that much complexity, but I dont think its necessary. And despite all the sweetness, theres a bit more wine to this than the higher-numbered bottlings. (5/09)

Didn't Alois Kracher have something to do with the Ordonez wine?

Yes, Alois made the wies till his death. From 2008, his son Gerhard is making the wines

Best alvarinho I have tried is Soalheiro Primeiras Vinhas. Dirk Nieeport has made some consulting in recent years. Older ones are also very appealing

Did you take this from my reception?!? *winky*

I've only had young bottles, but they are the DRC of VV when fresh.

Didn't think of that. But I did buy, and drink, an awful lot of it immediately afterwards. The wine wasn't new to me, but somehow I'd forgotten how much fun it was to drink.

We didn't buy nearly enough of it. We had leftovers of The Shadow, but had to reload halfway through dinner with crappy Chardonnay from the shop up the street.
