Just learned that he died over the weekend. I feel so lucky to have met him; he seemed to be a kind, joyful man, and a great soul. And of course I adored his wine.

And so it goes. Ditto on the man and his wine. I have a photo of the Avril family in the cellar, matter of fact.

What a real shame. One of the absolute greats in the world of wine. He consistently made one of my favorite wines.

Elie sold me my first bottle of Clos des Papes. He was triangulating - an accomplished 94 Diochon Chiroubles and some Fixin or other - with praise - meant I must like "subtle" Chateauneuf du Pape. Can't say he was wrong.
