TNR: Dom. Costal Chablis "Truffieres"

Asher

Asher Rubinstein
Hard to find any information about this, but apparently it's hand selected by Bernard Raveneau (not sure if it was the left or right hand, and whether he selected his own hand), and unfiltered. I further hear that unfiltered Chablis is rare. Vintage would be 2007, but info on past vintages (of this wine) would be helpful also. Many thanks.

Here's a TN from my notebooks on the 2005: "Pale straw, with a hint of gold. Lemongrass, verbena, and green apple on the nose, early springtime and citron on the palate, with just a hint of sunshine. Tart but very well balanced with a nice finish."

Those herbs I was picking up on the nose smell like truffles to some (cf. vineyard name) and apparently there's some debate as to whether they are black or white. It had a good sense of craftsmanship and I was sorry to see the last drop go. I found it good enough to justify its price tag (mid-twenties IIRC) though I wouldn't call it a 'great value' at that price. But I could see myself being tempted to buy it again.

As to the filtering I don't remember a residue but I did note that there were a few tartaric acid crystals in the bottle.

There is a type of black truffle (also known as summer truffle) that grows in the region. (It is different and greatly inferior in quality to truffles that are found in Provence and Southwest France.) A second possible explanation for the vineyard name is that the vineyard was a site where those truffles could be found.

Tuber aestivum, if you like. Earthy, but its price benefits heavily from the association with its much more aromatic brethren.

Exactly. What the hell does 'hand selected' mean? I hand select all of my wines. Except for the ones I open with my toes.

What, you close your eyes and feel around for a bottle? I mind-select my wines.

Ah, but Sharon not everyone has your mastery of telekinesis. Would that we did.
