1987 Klein Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon

Picked it up based on it being a Santa Cruz cabernet I'd never heard of before. Pretty good though it's a bit too heavy on the oak. Might still absorb it with more time as it's still fairly structured and there's some attractive fruit there.

I'm curious as to how it showed after a few hours of being open. I'll have to ask the guys at CWS the next time I'm there.
 
who worked full-time at Mondavi at the time, and did the Klein thing as a consultant. He made the wine at the same place I made my '87s. I think they were pretty good grapes; '87 was 5th leaf for the vineyard. Coincidentally, Pat played on my softball team for a few years; he was a really god ballplayer.
 
The vineyard that these grapes came from is now part of Mt. Eden, I think, and the grapes now go into their cab.

I had the '88 and the '90 a while back. The '88 was done (stewed, gross) but the '90 was pretty delicious, IIRC.

His was the only note I found. He was very complimentary about the '89, also commenting that he'd never heard of them before.

The wine was quite good other than having a bit too much oak influence. I'll revisit a second bottle in 3 or 4 years. Certainly worth the $15 I paid on winebid. Though I really liked the 2007 d'Oupia better...

Well, to be more accurate $15+winebid %age + shipping.

I'm not running out to buy the bottles left there this week but I don't regret picking up 3 of them.
