Jouard 2002 Chassagne Monrachet 1er les Champs-Gains
Mellow golden color. With an hours decanting, aromas of peach with a hint of apple and caramel. Round and mouth-filling, with the same peach-apple-caramel flavors, and decent glycerol buffering. Perky acidity keeps the flavors in balance, and a decent finish, make up, in sum, a very good glass of wine.
2002 Burguet Bourgogne
Healthy red, with air time big floral aroma with hint of vegetables and cherries. Sweet, round fruit on the palate, supported by a firm structure of tannins and acid. Not complex. Within about forty minutes of opening, the fruit elements tended to dissipate, leaving pumice-like dry tannins as most prominent. Good with simple stir-fried chicken.
Weve been through most of a case of this in 2001 and 2002 vintages and found it very nice value for the price (about $12 net). I dont know if the fruit will reassert itself over the tannins as time passes, or if the wine is nearing the end of its plateau; I suspect the latter.
1999 Doennhoff Niederhaeuser Hermannshoehle Spaetlese Trocken
Light straw color, faint nose of lemon custard and citrus. Texturally very pleasant, round and glycerol, with good mineral dusting and acid cut. The flavors are muted, but the sense of harmony and balance are compelling, and make this a fine wine to drink with appetizers, fish, or light meat, or as an aperitif. Purchased at the Weingut in 2001. We had a flawed bottle of this a couple of months ago and thought it might be over the hill relieved to be proved wrong.
