Cat's claw, iron paw,
Neurosurgeons scream for more,
At paranoia's poison door,
21st Century Schizoid Man...

(only in the UK do claw and more rhyme)

With enough processing (or just plain clipping) you can get any two words to rhyme. Then again I wonder if they sent Lake's vocals through Fripp's board for that recording?

Interestingly there was a strong divide in college. Most of my friends loved 21st Century Schizoid Man while I loved In the Court of the Crimson King. When I saw the album come out I'd always hope it wouldn't be turned off after 2CSM. It often was.

At the risk of painting with too broad a brush, I see parallels here to wine appreciation: neophytes often seem to be drawn to bombast and overblown statements where experience often leads to an appreciation of nuance and elliptical statements (with the prominent exception of TBPG, pun intended). At the same time, the value of a good primal romp should never be ignored, which is why Red is still one of my favorite KC albums.

I think from start to finish, Larks' Tongues In Aspic remains King Crimson Version 1's best album. I find Red is usually vastly underrated, as it's a transitional type of sound for what was previously established. Close at times to stuff done by U.K.

Islands is strong just on the merit of "Ladies Of The Road" and "Prelude: Song Of The Gulls"...

I like "Court" even if the cosmic-ness is a bit dated.

"Larks" is just a trip from start to finish. "Can I do another one right away?"

One of the V2 jobbies wasn't bad; forget if it was "Beat" or "Discipline"; my vinyl is inaccessible just now.

Probably Discipline, which was their first. Very solid album. Beat is notable for "Sartori in Tangier" and "Neal And Jack And Me" and their third, Three of A Perfect Pair, has its moments like "Nuages." Pretty much everything after that is unlistenable to me. Thankfully I can fall back on shit like "Lone Rhino" or "Twang Bar King" or even some of the Fripp/Summers collaborations if needed...

Discipline, definitely. Beat was kind of a poppish mess, and is unquestionably my least favorite album of any KC era.
