Not a lot of cru in this Beaujolais

Unusually dark. Cornas-like color. I like the silky texture, but overall it's a simple wine. I hope it's because I opened it too early. Smokiness and red fruit on the nose. Black fruits on the palate with maybe a streak of black cherry. Balanced and it seems to have the acidity to age. Just not much going on the first few hours after I popped the cork nor the next morning. This is my only bottle but if I had another one I wouldn't open it for several years based on this bottle. A Louis/Dressner import.

Steve,
I have one of these that will be drunk soon and I too will post.
That said, I have had maybe 5 bottles of this since release and always been pleased.
Best, Jim

I've had a couple of these since release. What Jim said.

I just think now is not the time to drink 05s.
On the other hand, the '05 Georges Descombes Morgon VV last night was fabulous. Something like Morgon spiked with a bit of Vosne spice. The wood-averse might have raised an eyebrow, but nothing more.

Brad,
That does not seem a bad idea and I agree in general - but I can't stay away from them.
Best, Jim

Any 05 I've had has been delish. But then I never find gamay to be a closed grape or go through dumb phases like pinot noir does in spades.

A recent bottle of 'O5 Guy Breton Morgon VV, exhilarating upon release, seems to be closed. I have high hopes for this when it comes out of its shell.

Too me, the glory years of cru quality Gamay are at 6-10 years, and I find a dip between their youth and this period. For example, right now the 04 Thivin is not that great (that said, I can't keep my hands off it, either).

Way too disciplined for me.
Agreed, assuming one has enough bottles to track development as well as enjoy down the road.

I've opened a lot of wine too young in the past few years, and it's often (though not always) a waste of money; a double waste, in fact. So discipline is what I'm aiming for now.

I might make an exception for the Poncie, because of your notes, but, on the other hand, I only managed to get a few bottles of this and don't want to be profligate with them. BTW, have you tried a Garant yet?

I opened the Reserve from the same vintage a bit ago and had virtually the same experience. I was sorry I had not stored it away for awhile. I loved it on release, but this last bottle was closed.
