CWD: 1994 Docteur Parce Collioure Les Junquets

Drinking a 1994 Docteur Parce Collioure Les Junquets tonight that is all swampwater with chocolated cherries and some manicure parlor plus a little bit of semi-unwashed horse thrown into the fermentation tank to add a savory component. It also verges on having just a hint of spritz but I'd describe it more as "nervosit" instead "fucked up" (but YMMV) and on the whole the wine is very reminiscent of a 1981 Beaucastel* (but without that extra octave-or-two extension you'd get by adding the CdP subwoofer. I've got no anchovies in the house but I'm drinking it with pasta with some grilled chicken with olive oil, garlic, tofu, and herbs yanked from what the rabbits left of my garden. (goddamn them rabbits)

Not bad for a Monday night, and much better than Id suspected it would be.

-Eden (talking about the wine, not this particular Monday, which is about as exciting as you'd suspect while watching this particular "Top Gear" episode for the 12th time)

*I've got no dog in any which hunt whatsoever as regards the importer of the alleged wine that allegedly may or may-not have suffered heat stroke on it's not-so-bon voyage here, but I honestly don't recall from whence the last bottle of '81 Beaucastel emanated. So sue me (or actually, don't)(thanks - I'm fine with being morally bankrupt but can't countenance the financial version)

My last '81 Beaucastel went straight into the sink. Nothing there but Brett.

I've had sublime bottles, though.

I thought I was the only person on this site who drank Mas Blanc!

The Junquets is my least favorite cuvee. It doesn't quite seem as put together as the Moulin. The 1993 and 1995 Clos du Moulin is superb, and gives a good vintage Beaucastel a run for its money. I haven't tried the 1994.

You get rabbits in the Golden State?! And I thought you only had to deal with earthquakes.

nice to know this wine is still alive (in the primordial soup sort-of-way) and kicking. That swampy description is what is so telling of these wines: funk in spades, get down on it. I love this stuff. Do you have any notion of how the 2004's may age? From what I've tasted so far, (Junquets, Moulin, Cosprons or whatever), they are drinking very nicely already.

I had some the other night. It's something I'll drink, but not buy.

It might have been the 1990 Coule de Serrant or the 1942 Ygay, or perhaps even the 1994 Screaming Eagle.

-Eden (I know that those would be on the list of wines I'd happily drink but I sure am not going to buy).
