So learn me about Von Hvel

I'm learning I like the wines of the Saar. This is about the fifth Von Hovel I've had and it was excellent.
What I know about Von Hovel is that they've got this Scharzhofberg vineyard and the monopole in Hutte. Scharzhofberg makes some of Germany's most prestigious wines, at leaast Egon Muller stickies, but Von Hovel is thought to have a bad position in the vineyard. The Hutte is preferable.
This wine I had tonight was excellent. I bought it mainly because it was a close out and I got a nice discount. Now I have to decide if I want to save the other two and let them age or drink them before they start to shut down.
So let's kick around Von Hovel. I'd like to hear the board's thoughts.

2006 Von Hvel Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (7/13/2009)
This is in a really good spot right now. Initially out of balance with a little bit too much sweetness, but as it gets air it comes into balance. Slate, slate and more slate on the nose and the palate. The nose also has diesel, nuttiness, flowers and some white fruit. The palate is surprisingly creamy for a kabinett -- I usually get this level of creaminess in ausleses. But the wine is light, perhaps even lithe. The palate is as complex as any young riesling I've ever had. Honey, yellow apples, lime the slate I've already mentioned and some Chinese spices I don't normally get until the riesling has had a decade or more of bottle age. The acidity is maybe a bit soft for me, which might make is significantly soft for others but there's so much going on with the rest of the wine it's easy to miss it.Lingering finish. A Dee Vine Wines import.

A lot of that sweet creamy stuff you describe is a feature of the 2006 vintage. Otherwise, I find von Hovel to be nice fresk brisk Saar wine with perhaps not as much polish as Egon Muller and a bit earthier than Zilliken. Given the attractive pricing they are some of my favorites and I really like the style.

We used to drink vh's kabinetts/qbas a few years ago and enjoyed them. I have some 99 sharzhofberger al somewhere and I'll try one soon. Also some 01. I've read that his oberemmerlerhutte holdings produce better wine than his scharzhofberger, but have never had the pleasure of tasting them.

McArthur's in D.C. used to and may still stock his wines, for those who wish to explore.

I don't think they have any at the moment but this past year they had 1 or 2 bottlings.

If your in DC, I'd be happy to supply a Von Hovel theme event. Have too much of the stuff, from back through the 90s. Good wine, just have too much.

You never mentioned that!

I'm a big fan of theirs and have always been looking to taste more. If you want to do something before July 31st, I'd definitely be interested (and have other stuff to add in as necessary)..

Also, I hope Amsterdam went well!

Weeknights are perfect for me. But Tuesday is the one day I'm busy next week. Mon Wed or Thurs? (Thursday being preferred/perfect, for me at least).

Putting together a von Hovel jeebus clear on the other coast.
Would appreciate any more insight the board has into this winemaker.

If there's room, I'd like to join you. For me Wed is not working out, but other than that I am OK, with probably a preference for Thursday.

Thursday is good for me.

I was given this bottle as a gift, thus only 1 bottle. I have heard mixed reviews on the 2004 Saar vintage. Can anyone offer any insight?
