On the road

Our travels have taken us to friends homes, nice restaurants, a back porch or two, and, my cellar to pick up some bottles to share including . . .

2006 E. Vatan, Sancerre: started closed ended magnificent, all of which took about three hours. SB does not get more enticing.

1999 Maison Leroy, Vonay Santenots: showing beautifully right from the bottle. Complex, deep, seamless and smooth; all wood integrated - lovely.

1998 Vieux Telegraphe: decanted four hours finally showing its saline, meaty side and still plenty of structure. Its taken awhile for this to wake up.

1999 Thomas, Pinot Noir: this too, has taken years to open and now it is. Very bright cherry fruit with some earthy nuance. Good wine.

2005 de Villaine, Bourgogne Clous: softer then at release but also with more depth and breadth. I like it but think theres more hiding.

2007 Overnoy, Arbois-Pupillin: full of character and presence a fine poulsard and though it may not be for everyone, it is very much in my wheelhouse.

2005 Vissoux, Poncie: while its firm down deep its also fruit forward and so delicious. Drink or hold.

2005 Henri Bourgeois, Pully-Fume: good but not great sauvignon with just a nod toward cat pee.

2003 Giacosa, Nebbiolo dAlba Vamggiore: better than the last several bottles because it has lost its baby fat and is beginning to taste more like the heat of the vintage did not effect it long term. Very nice.

2007 Donnhoff, Riesling: light, off-dry, cherry pit and stone; enchanting.

2006 Edmunds St. John, That Old Black Magic: reminds me of a recent 2007 Delas, CdR, but with more verve. Good stuff with a shelf-life.

2007 Edmunds St. John, Heart of Gold: bright, crisp and tending to taste more like vermentino than grenache blanc; this wine has cut.

Several other bottles which now I forget.
More to come,
Jim

Had this last week and I'll agree with the darkness: surprisingly big, but ohh so tasty!

Attach a pad/blackberry to you!

Indeed, why try to remember the forgettable ones?

Speaking of which...Jim, my memory isn't what it used to be (and even what used to be is suspect).....let me see if I can get this right: the '07 Overnoy (which you've posted on maybe a couple of times in recent months) is, generally speaking of course, more representative of Overnoy's poulsards than the '06? Do I remember correctly some discussion here that the '06 is somewhat riper than the norm for this wine?

I have yet to try one of these (and not sure what's available locally at the moment) but given how much I've followed your notes with interest, I think I better make a little more effort now.

Ok, I guess neither creole style jambalaya nor crispy duck necks are common in the Arbois. Although I wouldn't know for sure..

Curiosity got the better of me, Rahsaan...

Click on the British flag for a spiffy rundown on "everything" you need to know about Jurassic juice and food pairings. Aeration info is interesting too.
