TN: Bastille Day at Chateuneuf-du-Joe's

Weird, you two.

I was at the Skurnik tasting of Thiese champagnes a few weeks ago and found Aubry among the more compelling, along with Jean Milan. My notes for Billiot's NV Cuve Rserve read: "Dosage hell."

Also tasted: Gimonnet, Hbrart, Margaine, Geoffroy, Phu-Simonnet, and Goutorbe.

As noted, Aubry and Milan were the best of the lot.

To me.

ETA: Worst of lot were Phu-Simonnet; two bottlings got: "Garbagey" and "Unclean."

Yeah, Aubry uses "forgotten" varieties like arbanne, petit meslier, fromenteau, &c.

Hang on, isn't there just the Le Nombre D'Or "Campanae Veteres Vites" made from those heritage grapes?
The other cuves are from the usual three, right?

According to Skurnik/Thiese, there is a small percentage of the rest even in the NV brut. I had thought 15%, but according to my little booklet, it's closer to 3%.

The brut is mostly meunier.

Having posted first and then checked later, I see there's even another hertage grape cuvee, Les Cuves Precieuses. So, at Aubry, things aren't as distinct as I thought; I should have known better.

For me, I always liked Milan, Larmandier-Bernier (now L/D), Peters, and Vilmart.

These days, it's mostly Peters and Larmandier, but that's for different reasons.

The only Champagne in my cellar is Vilmart.

Vilmart is great stuff. I take back any bad things I've said about VLM and his taste in D&R (their 2007 Crozes Hermitage Blanc is fucking amazing).

Afterwards, they all went bathing at Baxter's.

I don't get this. Can someone explain it to me?

Here.
I knew that part, but I don't get it either.

But thanks for the help.

It's just that jokes sometimes require more thorough, stepwise elucidation.
