Soft 2003 Schaefer GD Sptlese #11

2003 Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Sptlese #11
I had a bottle of this a few months ago and liked it a lot more. Not sure if that was because the barometric pressure was different, or because the earlier bottle was under a Laker playoff victory-haze, but this bottle is much less exciting.

There is some fun zesty mineral zing around the edges but the big middle is just too soft. Certainly not a chore to drink and my wife and I enjoyed finishing the bottle (actually I should take credit for most of that). But it definitely lost points for that soft middle and was also much less compelling than the flowery and fragrant 03 Himmelreich Sptlese from earlier this week.

Not that any of these notes are definitive. I guess in theory I would keep tracking the wines but time is short and I don't have any more. But I'll survive. Plenty of other wines out there.

I've only had a couple of 2003s recently, but I was surprisingly disappointed. After having tightened up, they seem to have regressed into a somewhat syrupy state. I say, forget about them for at least a couple of years.

Yes, that is what I plan to do with the handful of other bottles I have (Haart PG Spat, Prum GH and WS Spat, and Vollenweider GK Spat).

We can sample a bunch of the 2003s in my cellar & see if it's a general problem. As posted elsewhere, a 2003 Willi Scheafer Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese was quite delicious a couple of weeks ago.
