96 Hureau SC Lisagathe

Lovely wine, much more lithe and delicate than I would expect in '96. Lots of small berry fruit. Lovely nose. Quite out of the Rougeard vein. Almost Burgundian. Absolutely in no need of more time.

Does that mean you were expecting rougher more shocking acids?

96 was a pretty fine year in the Loire, without much roughness, no?

Regardless of those semantics, nice that it was showing well.

Well, I would generally wait on 96 CF Loire. I was expecting a more tannic and and closed chalky back end. This was nothing like that - it was delicate, intricate, lovely. The 98 Lisagathe we had recently needed years but this was a totally different deal.

96 was a great Loire year but I'm generally not yet tucking in.

Yes, depending on the cuvee there can be different showings. But, I understand the value of waiting on some of these. Monkey be damned!

Do not tempt the wrath of the monkey.

There are quite a few wines that are in peak drinkability (most Druet, Baudry Grezeaux) and some that have missed it (e.g. Raffault Picasses) and some that are starting to get there, but still need some more time (Rougeard, Breton Perrieres, Baudry Croix Boisse).

The 1996s can be beautifully structured wines, but they don't have the concentration or deep structure (that is, very big tannins like in 2005) of more recent "great" vintages. They are primarily about balance.

The 1969s were very structured wines in their youth.

Aha. (Assuming this was a typo and should be 1996).

I didn't taste any of the 96 wines until the early 2000s.

Rereading this, I realize I wrote the sentence about Rougeard very poorly - I meant this wine is not at all like the (few) Rougeards I've had. This was more delicate and fruit driven.
