1998 Lopez de Heredia Tondonia Rose

Jay Miller

starts out slightly orange scented (or is that the power of suggestion from the color?) with old wood notes and some tea. Nice enough. Half hour later it's quite lovely rounder in texture and good acidity. It's no 1997, but manages to satisfy the Tondonia Rose itch nonetheless.

Good match with fried chicken.

loved the '97, had trouble with the '93, but maybe it was just in a weird spot. thanks for the notes.

'95 is still my favorite of the 4 vintages I've had ('93, '95, '97, '98).

sounds like you have pretty decent access to rosado vintages, Jay. not so much here in Japan.

just popped my last 93 tonight....what a difference a year makes. last year it was all dark red bouillon and soy...this year it's golden brassy apricots (both dried and fresh) mixed with lemon rinds, and the savory notes are well melded. the transformation is pretty mindblowing. now the 93 completely eclipses the 97 in my book.

wish I had kept some of the '93 now. Maybe I can talk Manuel into opening one when he's in NY.
