NWR: NY Times Top 17 Bagels in NYC

There were few things better than a fresh out of the oven H & H bagel (original spot/ownership on the SW corner of 80th and Broadway) on a cold Winter's day. Utopia is deserving of best these days, imo. They also opened up a spot on 34th and Lexington, if you don't want to schlep to Queens. There used to be a really good, under the radar place called Bagel Mill around 88th and 1st, but they closed a few years ago. Tal is solid. Apollo was also really good. Absolut was great, though I've yet to try the new iteration. Haven't tried Essa in years. Used to really like them.

The new iteration of Absolut is better. The old H&H is long gone. Even in the old days (toward the end), the mice weren't a good look.

Yes, as I noted on the site before it got deleted last week, one of our great juvenile joys in the early 90s was taking bagels from the backdoor of H&H (on 80th) where they would put them in giant racks to cool after coming out of the oven. Obviously we had no adornment, it was straight bagel snack.

As with so many things (including wine), it would be interesting to go back in time and taste those bagels now.
