Outrageous Burgundy

Just curious, not to spoil the mood, but Marechal villages goes for about $40/btl, which is what you pay for a Bize 1er - my SLB favorite and benchmark. Is this a good deal?

A Bize 1er is only $40 on closeout. The frontline pricing for 2005 Bize 1ers were closer to $60.
$46 out here, and that's not on closeout -- that was the original price and it still is the price almost two years later.

Well good for you. I was never offered it at $46 that I can remember. The wines seemed to possess superb material out of barrel, so $40s is a good deal.

I agree with Claude's list except I don't have much experience with Camus-Brochon.

I'd add the Savigny of Jadot to that list. I like them and most are Gagey parcels.

I had the 2004 Roulout Bourgogne blanc a couple of years ago and it was shut down pretty hard. I've got a bottle in my cellar and I hope it opens up sometime soon.
But for the price, it sounds like a great wine to try in the baby fat phase.

Apropos Chandon de Briailles, Mike Schuster just gave the 2005 Ile de Vergelesses a pretty mediocre note in the World of Fine Wine. But this is a fairly elegantly-styled wine that you would expect to be austere until it opens up, some years from now, que no?

I'll have to check when I get home, but I'm pretty sure I drank that wine in March and found it flat-out gorgeous. Of course, one man's austere is another's racy and fresh, so...

It was the Fourneaux and it was last September:

'05 Chandon de Briailles SLB Fourneaux

Fresh and earthy on the nose, wonderfully precise on the palate with a core of minerality. Beautifully silky texture. A refreshing acid snap on the back end really draws out the finish. Great stuff.

Fresh...earthy...wonderfully precise on the palate with a core of minerality...refreshing acid snap

Sounds great to me but truth be told, these are code words that might make some people afraid. Sort of like when I see 'hedonistic' or 'unctuous' in a note.
