TN: Sans soufre wines at Terroir, 8/24

I had a pretty stunning 2002 Clos Senechal earlier this summer. It makes me wish I had more than a solitary 2005 in the basement.

I did too.

I somehow missed the 2005. It must have scored points somewhere and when I finally got around to securing some, it was gone.

Oh well.

I liked the Binner. Sure, if one tasted it blind, it would be very easy to guess that it was 100% Gewurz. However, I thought it was well-balanced. Even though it was lower-acid on the scale, it wasn't a murky mess. There was still some nice delineation and it was properly dry.

The wines I had issues with were the Movia Rose, Valette P-F, and the Pfifferling. The Movia did have some nice strawberry scents, but offered no pleasure in the mouth. Way too dirty. The Valette struck me as wine that was different just for the sake of being different. Why would I want to deliberately purchase/drink overly-oxidized, botrytised Chardonnay? I fail to understand the market for that wine. The Pfifferling was at least interesting, but ultimately didn't float my boat in what I'm looking for in a Rose.

I loved the Tournelle Vin Jaune and Overnoy Savignin. By far, my favorite red was the Massa Vecchia Rosato. That meat blood/beef fruit note blended perfectly with the level of brett. I enjoyed smelling this wine as much as tasting it. However, the juicy, refreshing qualities of the Breton were difficult to ignore.

Fun evening. I was wondering when the blonde upstairs was going to start taking her clothes off. Animale, indeed!

saw the overnoy savagnin 00 today in kyoto's only hipster shop...going for $100 ish. i thought there was some financial merit in going geek but guess not.

megadeth over la mer? that sounds like the orange wine i had a week ago, thor.

Properly understood, what you should be tasting in an orange wine is Megadeth played by a double bassoon quartet.

They are very different animals, the 02 and 05 Clos Senechal. Darker fruits, more extracted. The 05 is going to take a lot of time, I think.

What's with the welcoming wishes for Catherine and Pierre?

Slaton, thanks for the notes, the wines sound challenging.

Is the 2000 Manu Houillon Savignin available for purchase at terroir?

We opened a bottle of the 2005 Clos Snchal earlier this summer. It was very nice, though I wouldn't rush to drink it now. I've opened a couple bottles of Galichets (2003 and 2004) this summer, and the Snchal is a big step up. Much more focused. Drink and hold. I'll have to see what of the 2002 I have left.

I haven't had the 2000 Movia Puro, but I had the 2001 last May in a restaurant in Milan. Nice fruit, good acidity, yes, a bit of earthiness, but nothing unclean about it. Don't know if it is a vintage or bottle difference, but I'd happily drink the 2001 again.

Fuck Catherine and Pierre.
You can say that again.

Anyone want an original edition numbered Epaule Jete poster?

I'll take your poster, and all your older vintages as well.

No, but Guilhaume will send you a postcard semiannually reminding you that he won't be able to sell you any this time, either.

Because i don't sell it to you doesn't mean i won't sell any...
you don't want to pay that kind of money for oxidized wine anyway...right?

It's cool, your business partners sell me Houillon when you're not there.

VLM: yes it is business, no it's not doing well...
