Reading up on the Jadot purchase of Ferret left me wondering if Colette made the 88 and 89's or was it her mother-or someone else? Any have any info on Ferret? Who is making the wine now-Jadot or the Ferret team? which is Colette's daughter? TIA.

When did this happen? I remember rumors but didn't follow up. I've had some great bottles of Ferret wine.

Pretty sure the 2006 is right. Rosenthal did a tasting last year that I went to & his railing against Jadot was quite...well...vitriolic. I think he hates Jadot more than he hates screw caps (and he really hates screw caps).

David,

Why does Rosenthal hate screw caps? I agree for ageworthy wines-but for short term drinkers what is his beef?

Per my (public) discussion with Mr. Rosenthal a while back he believes that the romance (yes he used that word) of the cork is an intrinsic part of the wine experience. He clearly stated that he would never import any (yes he said any) wine under screw cap.

The gods smiled upon him as the very next bottle opened at the tasting was corked. He remained unrepentant.

88s or 89s would have been made by the mother.

Had a recent 00 Ferret that was appropriately old school but not glorious.

A '97 awhile back (2 and half years ago) was amazing, glorious, all-one like Dr. Bronner's, and then some months passed and it was tired, more months, oxidative, further months, woe be is me for opening one.

Brad,

Sorry to interrupt the Wine Disorder ans. but Rosenthal's book arrived today and as I opened it I came immediately to the chapter on Ferret. What a great read talking about Madame Ferret and Colette-who died in 2006-with no kids-so the sale to Jadot and mentioning the 86 which was my first Ferret and the tasting of the 89's-my first purchase-with a wine critic. It looks like I will really enjoy Rosenthal's book.

I opened a bottle of 1998 les menetrieres last night with a roast chicken and it was still fucking pretty. All honeysuckle candles with some nice acid running through the middle with just a touch of oxidation (but literally just a touch. This is a wine that i fell in love with when i first started drinking nice stuff and i'm happy it's still drinking well Goddamn shame about Jadot buying the vineyards.

And the alternative?

Jadot makes any number of fantastic wines from the land that they own. No it won't be the same as the old Ferret, but with no heirs it was never going to be the same.
