Stunning Schafer-Frohlich

Salil Benegal

Salil Benegal
In NY catching up with some old family friends. Dropped by Crush yesterday to pick up something to take to dinner, decided on a 2007 Schfer-Frhlich Monzinger Halenberg Riesling Sptlese. Not much I can say here other than it's seriously awesome with a wild flavour profile ranging from pineapples and cherries to lilacs and spices and a palate combining tremendous power and richness with really good acidity and balance. Fantastic (and I need to buy more.)

Hard to pick, they're both really awesome wines. I found the 07 Halenberg sweeter and more exotic/tropical in its flavour profile and Felseneck a bit more minerally with more citrus/red fruited flavours.

That said I think both are outstanding in different ways and worth experiencing.

If I were to buy only one, should it be this or the Felseneck sptlese?

If it is of any help to you to note that the '08 Schafer-Frohlich Spatlese Bockenauer Felseneck is massively reductive and one of my least pleasant recent tasting experiences, I will note it. If it is of no help to you, I guess I still note it.

Is that another sulfur bomb?

Salil (still remembering the '07 Felseneck GKS that needed about 2 days in a decanter to shed its sulfur. FFS.)

The 2006 Schfer-Frhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Sptlese Goldkapsel was amazing a couple of months ago...fortunately, it was on clearance at Dee Vine and I have 11 more to enjoy...
No excess sulfur noted in this wine if I remember correctly

I recall the regular 06 Felseneck Spatlese was a stinking sulphur bomb on release -- though it seemed impressive, in an intimidating sort of way.

I liked that '06 Felseneck. There was definitely some funk on the nose, but it lifted just enough to let the fruit out after a few hours open.
