Two dinners, a Red and a White

2000 Haut Batailly: Cedar and cherry on the nose, flavors to follow, with a pleasant, slightly furry feel in the mouth and that mild B'x bitterness. Little beauty, but much comfort, like visiting an old favorite aunt.

Fit like a shoe with grilled rack of lamb, mashed potatoes, and fresh vegetable ratatouille. Decanted about two hours, but not sure it needed the extra air time - no reason not to drink these now.

2002 Fevre Fourchaume Vaulorent: Also ready to drink, sparking slightly straight out of the bottle, though a little disjointed. With half an hour's airing, clean and precise, with a fine mineral-acid-fruit balance. Marshy-caramelly nose and flavors, medium-bodied. This too is about ready; previous bottles have taken overnight to taste right.

Surprisingly good match for cornmeal-cheese fritters with black beans and spicy yogurt sauce. The feared spectre of prem-ox has yet to cast its shadow on our '02 Fevres.
