fuck champagne

It's a big business with a big problem. They need to think more creatively, however; there are other approaches besides cuts in production.

Something seems skewed here. The Supply and Demand equation is pretty "natural" in economics and
business. Here we have some "manipulation" being attempted, apparently with the goal of spoofing the
market at the expense of growers and consumers. Recent pricing was bubble-like so why are they so attached to it?

How will this effect grower/producers? Do they have to abide by the yields set by the large negociants or will they be able to go their own way? If the former is the case, does this mean grower champagne will be even more competitive? 'Cause that, my friends, would rule...

peter liem tells me that the growers will 'get in trouble' if they do not abide by the yields set by the aoc. i appologize, but i did not ask him to elaborate.

The "Big Houses" and the small growers association negotiate yields and prices each year. The AOC yield limits don't change. We have two sides that are far apart this year. If they can't agree, a government bureaucrat sets a yield. It's not clear whether Grower Producers are bound by either resulting yield.
I think they may be only if the government steps in and sets it. Contracted growers must follow what
the grower association negotiates with the buyers. I can't see why grower producers would.

my guess is that people like larmandier-bernier have always cropped at levels lower than the limit being suggested here.

on another note, wasn't there a big push in france in the last year or so to increase the 'hectareage' for the champagne AOC? is this being abandoned?

In June 2008 the NYT had an article on expansion due to global demand. Don't know if plans had changed but Peter Leim would know.
