That's certainly juicy stuff. Thanks.

The loans from Acker to Rudy are what really make this stink. Is that sort of thing common for "important" clients?
I think that's where the questions of market manipulation might arise. It seems highly unusual, but maybe I just don't run in the right circles.

Will have to ask .sasha.

FWIW, I bought wine from an Acker auction that turned out to have been from Chrish Peel of CWC.
Well, that's it. I'm never buying from auction again.

Joe and Jeff. Pretty exciting stuff. I wonder how many of the wine indices have had their results significantly boosted by the hammer prices in the last few years?

Sharon, Joe, Yixin... you're welcome.

That was an interesting read. My most urgent question is this: in almost every case Mr. Huang collateralized his loans with fine art, but has any authority determined that these works are not themselves frauds?

It's funny, when Dressner referred to Madoff and Ponzi schemes in some of his diatribes, I always interpreted that as a metaphor for some of the less savory ordinary hijinks of the legal wine trade and its critical/lifestyle apparatus. But actually it seems to all be literally true!

Y'know, when I first heard of this growing scandal, I thought that Rudy sounded a bit sleazy, but reading that document makes me think that this sounds a lot more like something involving organized crime where "Rudy" was just the public front. $10-30M/month of wine? WTF?? Regarding the collateral art, I question whether it even existed. This whole thing stinks.

Let's pause a moment to consider that we have heard only one side of the story.

Trial first, hanging after.

Churning that much value of wine -- or anything -- reminds me of that quaint old pastime called "day trading".

But before we call "counterfeiter" or "pump and dump", do let's be sure that the model really is a skank.

Well, we haven't really heard any sides of the story yet, not really. However, the circumstances are such that everyone involved with "Rudy" looks stinky.

Oh, I consider this a trailer preview of coming attractions. I've got *my* popcorn ready.

Fair-mindedness like this is a blight on the tenor and tone of this site. Let us remember that we are run by a politburo, not hosted by a constitutional format. By all means stone, hang and commit other verbal abuses.

I say they use water boarding in a pool of counterfeit wine to get the truth out. On both parties.

Can someone offer a quick summery of the document. I can download the file but it won't open on my MAC.

Did you guys remember to remove the .jpg ending to the filename? I had no problem opening it on a Mac. If you still have problems, fire up Acrobat and open the document up using the Open command.

Option click link. Save file as (take off .jpg). Open in preview/acrobat. Enjoy the read.

There are some very nice touches in the document that reveal put "Rudy" up there with some of the great swindlers. Aside from the wonderful decoration of some of the bottles (Reserve Nicolas neck labels and red wax capsules), the mention that the guy from Emigrant bank who loaned him millions against future income from absolutely legal foreign business had also bought wine from him was positively Madoffesque.

Emigrant bank is owned by the Milsteins who were the buyers of Remoissenet (ans Pierre-Antoine Rovani is somehow involved). Coincidentally, Remoissenet has an extensive back catalog of swill.

I find all these confluences and circumstances to be interesting, to say the least.

I wouldn't be surprised if this got BIG.
