It rises above the pedantic and becomes plain mean-spirited. Is that how they train young academics these days?

As a no-longer-very-young academic, I can answer this emphatically in the affirmative. Although (1) I think it's long been this way ("the game is so vicious because the stakes are so small" is a very old way to describe academe) and (2) Rahsaan strikes me as a pretty decent guy in general.

Joe, I don't know you at all in real life, I'm just a guy who follows your writings on the internet. But I know from these writings that the Breton wines have meant something to you at times, and to the degree that there was any personal hurt involved in whatever happened - which I know nothing about - I'm sorry.

....Why make senseless and contemptuous comments about other people's business that you don't give a shit about?

What is wrong with you?

It might be chemobrain. It might be that I am tired.

Or I might be tired by your pomposity.

Or some combination of the three.

Interesting.

I wonder which one of these conditions is the dominant one?

I know you will feel.compelled to have the last word.

Feel free.

I'm praying that Barbara Hirsch and Kermit Lynch have mad monkey love.

How's that for not giving a shit?*

*With all due respect to Helena Bonham-Carter in Fight Club.

Same here.

The Guiding Light was just cancelled. Soap Opera's seem terribly out of fashion.

It was renamed to Guiding Light some years ago. Articles are expensive so there was a substantial cost savings allowing them to continue to serve Romarantin on the set.
